The Immortals: Night Star by Alyson Noel

WARNING: SPOILERS FOR PREVIOUS BOOKS IN THE SERIES.

Synopsis

Ever and Damen must face bitter rivals, jealous friends and their own worst fears - all in the hope of being together forever.

So, here we are at the second to last book in the Immortals series. In my experience it can be difficult to sustain both excitement and a continuous story arc in long series. The strong link that ties The Immortals books together for me has been the emotional journey of Ever. She made some groundbreaking advances in the last book so I was curious as to whether she had more to learn. Her partnership with Damen is interesting too (I'm not one to say no to an interesting romantic lead!) and there's still much to be settled between them. I think Night Star clearly addresses the question, "What does it really mean to be eternal," and I for one found this very interesting.

The book opens with one massive problem - the lovely Haven. It's fair to say that she's more than a little vexed about what happened at the close of Dark Flame and in a way I can't say I blame her. However, any lingering feelings of sympathy I may have had for her didn't take long to disappear. The transformation of Haven in the last book is quite transfixing though. She has always been quite a damaged and confused character and she always takes what life offers and consistently makes all the wrong decisions.

Ever, on the other hand, is keen to stop making the mistakes of the past and move on. Damen has already shown her many of her past lives but he's only been showing her the edited version. The lovely Haven knows this and is kind enough to fill Ever in. Ever's furious and decides that she needs some space from Damen while she sorts herself out. Jude is ever present and Ever is forced to face up to what it is that she really wants. Is she destined to be with Damen? Or should she be with Jude? I was glad that Ever was given the space in Night Star to sort this question out for herself. She puts herself under pressure to come to a decision but both Damen and Jude leave her to it.

Miles is one of the stars of the book for me. He's returned from Italy a new, more confident person who's full of drive and ambition. His stay abroad has brought up quite a few questions about Damen and Ever that have been eating away at him. He gives the greatest speech on immortality and pretty much sums up the question that runs through the books, "If you could, would you choose immortality for yourself?" He sums it all up so perfectly that I had tears in my eyes. I also want to talk about Sabine as she annoyed me so much but I'd better not start ranting! Needless to say her discovery of Ever working as a psychic hasn't gone down well.

I await the final book with great impatience. The one down side of reading the series back-to-back is that I've become accustomed to just grabbing the next one! There's so much to resolve that I can't even guess at what will happen.

  1. I still have Dark Flame to read. I will get to it soon as it sounds as if things are really coming together. Thanks

  2. Sticking to a series is very difficult. The only one I did but still hadn't completed it is the Harry Potter series. I still have to read the last book (or last two books?). You passion excites me. Thanks
